Collier Family Letter
3 Nov 1857

Austin, Texas   3rd Nov 1857

Dear Elizabeth,

I reached this place on friday evening last at dark. Charles and Dick left me on wednesday evening for the purpose of finding some cattle for sale but did not buy. They got here yesterday morning and left in the evening for San Antonio & the west generally. We have all enjoyed fine health with the exception of some bowel complaint. I wrote you from Gay Hill and hope it was duly received.

Charles & Dick will come by on their way home. I shall every mail for a letter till I hear from you.

I had the pleasure of meeting cousin Thomas P. Aycock here as Representive from Falls, Lime Stone and Free Stone counties. He tells me that your uncle Thos Amis & aunt Sally are living and in pretty good health, though blind. His father and mother and younger children were well when last heard from.

Cousin Thomas appears to be quite a nice and clever young man. He is married but I did not ask him how long since or who he married.

The Legislature met, organized and elected their officers

yesterday and has now adjourned till 9 oclock tomorrow morning for the purpose of appointing Committees and nominating Candidates for United State Senators.

The weather keeps quite warm and I expect you will have the Sugar cane ground up before it will become necessary to do so.

I am Boarding at Mr. Wards, Col. Dooms father in law, and have Col. Doom for my bed fellow this winter. He has a very bad cold at present though able to attend to himself.

Clothing & Board high here. I will try to write to you or Wm Ratcliff, once a week.

Feeling that I have nothing to interest you with I will come to a close, hoping to hear from you soon. Some of you must write once a week.

Kiss my Dear little ones and believe me ever

                                                Your affectionate Husband,
                                                                             James G. Collier
