I've always had a love for the old oil lamps that are a part of my childhood memories. In fact, I was almost grown when some of my relatives up in East Texas finally got electricty. There is something almost mystic about those flickering flames and the shadows they cast in an otherwise dark room. I think another plus of setting around a oil lamp with family and friends, minus televisions, telephones and even computers; was where I heard so many of the stories that as I grew older would become more and more important to me.
I now have over a hundred oil lamps, some old, some not so old but different shapes and sizes. They remind me of the differences in personalities that make up every family. In fact, during the big freeze of 1997, between my fireplace and my oil lamps, we survived five days without electricity without to much discomfort.
